On a heavy Bowdens Park pitch Cheddar U 18’s produced their best performance of the season to thrash the league leaders Bridgwater with a battling display that left their opponents reeling by the final whistle.
The game started with Cheddar in a confident mood and it was against the run of play when Bridgwater took the lead. However an equaliser was not long in coming as a good through ball was latched onto by Ollie Sealey who finished confidently.
As the first half progressed Cheddar’s midfield took control with Rob Edwards in charge through the centre, supported ably by Ryan Cullen, with Simon Mounsden and Milo McClay causing problems down the wings.
Cheddar took the lead when Dan Eddolls, making his first start for the team, was put through by Edwards and calmly slotted home passed the visitor’s keeper. Sealey scored his second just before half time after another great team move.
Within minutes of the restart Bridgwater were harshly awarded a penalty but goalkeeper Seb Smith made an excellent save from the spot kick to keep the score at 3-1. However Bridgwater showed their spirit by almost immediately scoring a second and this put the Cheddar defence under pressure.
However the back four marshalled by Lewis Matthews and John Tee Boon held firm and soon Cheddar’s midfield took control off the match again. With fullbacks Matt Teagle and Dan Hobbs pushing forward it was no surprise when Cheddar restored their two-goal lead. Sealey completed his hat trick with a well-taken penalty.
With a third of the match remaining and Cheddar in complete control, manager Tim Richens was able to make changes and Scott Buxton had only been on the field for a few minutes before he was soaring at the far post to head home the fifth goal. Pat Day scored the sixth, giving the keeper no chance after a goalmouth scramble. After coming on Liam Young made a good contribution on the left side.
This win, against the league leaders, included some excellent individual performances, which bode well for future of Cheddar Football Club.
