After the sweet local derby win against Wells City the week previous, Cheddar went into this fixture with renewed confidence.
However, against bottom side Backwell United, it was a case of, 'after the lord mayor's show'.
A well worked move forwarded by left back Milo Maclay, and debutant John Edwards allowed Martin Davis to finish in style and put the Cheesemen in front.
Despite creating a bagful of chances in the first half, with Ash Edgecombe misfiring from a free kick, John Edwards, on his debut, hitting wide, and Matt Teagle failing to stretch the ball home, it really ought to have been four or five more than what they went in at half time with.
With the two sides trundling off at half time in the treacherous conditions, the home side could feel comfortable in wrapping up the game.
Though as we all know in football, it's not as easy as that. Backwell battled unlike a team who entered the match with no win all season. Despite not creating too many real clear cut chances they were always dangerous on the counter attack.
Cheddar played some nice flowing football, but just couldn't find that crucial second goal.
As time went on, and the rain lashed down, none more so than on a drenched Cheddar manager James Walker, it was almost inevitable that the visitors would sneak one.
With the Cheddar defence being near enough faultless all match, a Backwell forward found space in the box, turned and Josh Underhill was deemed to have tripped him. Dubious it looked, but nevertheless given.
The Backwell forward stepped up only to find Pete Fowler in irrepressible form. He palmed the ball away, but the Cheddar defence seemed to stop. The rebound was played across and bundled in from close range.
The player who was the eventual scorer in the scramble appeared to be in an off side position, but despite much Cheddar appealing, the goal stood.
Then moments later a hopeful ball forward was chased by the ever willing Backwell forwards, and chipped in to the back of the net.
2-1 down but still fighting. Cheddar's recent performances against Clevedon United Reserves and Wells City Reserves has seen them fight till the death.
They did no different. Edgecombe again fired wide, with Chris Beers also missing an opportunity. The impressive Edwards continued to find space but it just wasn't going to go in.
In stoppage time. Hardworking midfielder Richie Matthews chipped a free kick to the back post, it was nodded back across only for Scott Buxton to miss at the death.
Cheddar's manager James Walker was left disappointed at the end.
'Well I'm obviously bitterly disappointed. After last week's result we were looking to really kick on, but it's not to be. It's not as if we didn't create any chances. In the second half we wouldn't have scored in a brothel. But we're all disappointed. It's a case of regrouping and picking ourselves. We've got Nailsea next week who are second I think, and we're looking to win the game. I've got real belief in my lads, because I know they'll run through brick walls for me'. Said Walker
